 4th Year Dental Electives

Students on the BDS degree course at Bart's and The London are normally required to undertake a period of two weeks of elective study at the end of their 4th Year or beginning of their 5th Year.

 

Students are asked to set some specific aims and objectives for their elective period which will outline the experience they gain during that period. Each student is required to write a short report (less than 1000 words) addressing the objectives in their proposal. The report contributes to assessment for the BDS.

 

Students will not be permitted to participate in the investigation or treatment of patients. The elective are approved by Barts Dental School on this basis. A hazard checklist is provided to the host institution that should be completed and handed to the student on arrival. The students are required to return the completed checklist back to their Dental school.


Students are required to provide proof of satisfactory attendance on completion of their elective period. An assessment form will be provided to the institution that you attend for your electives by our dental school which will be filled in order to reflect the level of your commitment.

Please note that the dates outlined below are for current THIRD year students. Although dates are relatively similar each year they may vary slightly for different academic years.


A successful elective-SSM requires work over many months. To help your planning, deadlines are set for completion of stages in the process.


3 July 2009 preliminary elective proposal: declaration of group and internal advisor; proposal for elective location.

You must email a completed copy of the Elective Proposal form to dental-elective-tutor@qmul.ac.uk . Use the form (Available on CE6) as a separate file: elective1


A group of students planning an elective together should submit only one form.

 

Do not forget to save a copy of the completed form in your file-store.

CHECKLIST :

1.       A teacher has agreed to be your internal advisor

2.       Decided to go on elective alone or agreed a group (maximum 4 students)

3.       Decided what you (all) want to study (e.g. Paediatric Dentistry)

4.       Decided individual areas of study

5.       Decided where you (all) want to go

There is a list of staff contacts on Ce6, which will help you to contact the appropriate staff for specific elective locations;

25 September 2009 submission of elective project proposal: a brief project protocol and an outline of your elective plans.

 You are strongly advised to meet this deadline so that, if your proposal requires substantial revision, you will still have time to meet the 7 November deadline for approval of your project. 


Approval of your project proposal may be provisional on grant of research ethics approval at Bart's and The London and/or at the host
institution.


You must have an approved project for your elective to be agreed.

CHECKLIST:
 

1.       Your advisor has agreed your project proposals

2.       Host institution offers elective placements in an appropriate department

3.       Host institution offers elective placements at a time compatible with your elective period

4.       Each student in your group has individual objectives

 

 You will be informed by email whether your project proposal has been provisionally approved. Final approval will depend on its approval by the host institution and may also depend on grant of research ethics approval at Bart's and The London and/or at the host institution.

If your proposal is not approved, you will be given a date by which you must revise and resubmit it.

 

If your project proposal is not approved by 6 November 2009, you will normally lose one mark (of 5) from your SSM mark.

If you miss this deadline, you will normally lose one mark (of 5) for your SSM.

Approval of elective application: evidence that you have organised your elective. You will not be granted leave unless your

elective application is approved. See full booklet for more details.

 

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have approval for your project from the host institution, including research ethics

 approval if required. If your placement supervisor requires any change in your project, you must submit a revised Elective

 

 Project Proposal Form (Available on Ce6 as Elective 2) to dental-elective-tutor@qmul.ac.uk before your elective application can be approved.


CHECKLIST: 


1.
       You have been formally offered an elective placement

2.       The institution offers clinics or other facilities appropriate for your project

3.       The dates of your elective placement are compatible with your allocated elective period

4.       You have an appropriate named placement supervisor

5.       You have emailed your project proposal and a copy of any questionnaire, etc. to your placement supervisor.

6.       You have emailed the DDU or Dental Protection and received confirmation of cover for your elective

*NB: Your elective application cannot be approved unless you receive formal confirmation that your project proposal has been approved at the host institution.

23 April 2010: For Students who wish to apply for a Malcolm Jenkins Travelling Scholarship, a BATLAA award, or the David DiBiase Elective Award

 

7 May 2010: Normal deadline. If you miss this deadline, but your application is approved by 7 May, your SSM mark (maximum 5) will normally be reduced by 1 mark.

 

4 June 2010: Final deadline. If you miss this deadline, normally you will not be allowed to go on elective and you will receive zero marks for the SSM.

 

Please complete the form with your personal and elective details as soon as possible and email the form to dental-elective-tutor@qmul.ac.uk . You will need to see someone in the Occupational Health Team (020 7882 7207) before making an appointment with the Lead for Dental Electives.

When you see the Lead for Dental Electives you must take:

A completed electives application form, including the aim, objectives and method as agreed in your Elective Project form


1.     Evidence (e-mail/letter) that you have been offered an elective placement and that your project has been approved at the host institution

2.     Evidence (e-mail/letter) that the elective dates encompass 10 working days within the period available for your elective

3.     Evidence (e-mail/letter) that you have accommodation booked

4.     For electives overseas, a signature on the form from the Occupational Health Service. The form must specify the correct country for your elective.
