Our school was opened in 1911- It is one of the oldest dental schools in the UK.
As a dental school we have developed over the past 100 years and are always in the process of continual improvement.
The student dental society was formed in 1912.
Every dental student is a member of the society which is run by a committee of 22 members, each assigned to fulfil a particular duty. The committee is elected by dental students each year and holds two meetings of DENTSOC and SSLC each month.
Our objectives:
- To be a bridge between dental students and staff at the dental school.
- To consider new ideas and maintain a continuous state of evolving and improving.
- Maintain professionalism within the society.
During your five years of study you will learn the finest techniques in dentistry which will equip you to become the best possible kind of dentist!
This year’s BDSA Conference was held at Newcastle University in March and was a great success.
Students from various dental schools around the country attended and as always Bart’s were there in force with 32 students attending from years 3-5. All the dental schools stayed in a Travelodge, walking distance from the town centre and the riverside!
DAY TIME
The conference was spread out over 3 days, with guest speakers in various fields offering various lectures for the first two days, for example periodontal surgery and veneers. On the final day, a trade fair took place where everyone bagged more than enough goodies.
NIGHT LIFE!
During the evening there were themed nights and we were very kindly looked out for by 2 Newcastle students whom we became good friends with. The first night was an 80’s hip hop themed bar crawl where each school was provided with a different coloured t-shirt and a slogan, we had announced ourselves on the scene with the provided t-shirts “Bart’s and the London will access any canal”. Trust me when I say this as one of the best ones!!
The second night was a wildlife themed bar crawl - we were given cheetahs/leopards and found just about anything to wear including morph suits and togas.
The last night was a carnival style ball which was a perfect way to bring the conference to an end with the lads suited and booted, the girls dressed to impress, champagne reception followed by a dinner with acrobats performing above us as and various carnival games inside the venue.
During the conference Bristol University kindly put themselves forward to host the next conference which will take place around the 15th -17th March 2012.
Every year tickets are hard to come by with most schools receiving about 20-25 tickets, however we try our best to make sure we receive extra tickets as we know the demand for tickets is usually high.
The conference offers the chance to meet students from all over the country, get to know them and enjoy social events with them creating bonds between students and schools. It's the perfect setting to learn something different, and guest lecturers provide fascinating talks about topics which are not taught within the normal curriculum.
All in all the conference is a great way to take a small break from clinics/lectures/Whitechapel and just have a great time. Arti Patel (BDSA Junior Rep) and I will be looking forward to keeping you updated with next year’s conference and selling the highly demanded tickets to YOU!!
