Our school was opened in 1911- It is one of the oldest dental schools in the UK.
As a dental school we have developed over the past 100 years and are always in the process of continual improvement.
The student dental society was formed in 1912.
Every dental student is a member of the society which is run by a committee of 22 members, each assigned to fulfil a particular duty. The committee is elected by dental students each year and holds two meetings of DENTSOC and SSLC each month.
Our objectives:
- To be a bridge between dental students and staff at the dental school.
- To consider new ideas and maintain a continuous state of evolving and improving.
- Maintain professionalism within the society.
During your five years of study you will learn the finest techniques in dentistry which will equip you to become the best possible kind of dentist!
TEDDY BEAR HOSPITAL
Our goal is to teach children good dental hygiene practices, and how to prevent oral diseases through interactive teaching workshops run in local primary schools. The sessions run on Wednesday afternoons every fortnight. You can take part in the workshops as many or as little as you want. All we need from you is to email us and book a week in advance.
The campaign runs as a part of the Teddy Bear Hospital society. This society was set up at Bart and The London in 2004 with the aim to reduce anxiety and fear associated with hospitals, doctors and dentists within young children.
Our workshops:
* Oral Hygiene and Toothbrushing Techniques.
* Dietary control and its relation to dental caries.
* Visiting the dentist and dental equipment.
We also take part in ‘Safety day’ where more than 200 children join us at Mile end campus to learn about doctors, dentists, firemen and the police.
The campaign is made possible by our partnership with Oral B and GSK who provide our goodie bags with toothbrushes, toothpaste, stickers and much more
And with over 6 articles published in most UK dental magazines we are hope to continue this achievement for many years to come.
The sooner you get kids to understand the benefits of oral healthcare the more likely they are to adopt healthy habits when they grow up. As dental students we are the best recipients of dental education and we believe its time to share what we know outside the hospital clinics… so join us and help make a difference now that will last for generations.

The Teddy Bear Hospital Oral health campaign plays a major role in promoting oral health for children in Tower Hamlet. The first of its kind and with over 100 dental students involved in one year, our achievements have gone far beyond our expectations.
The proportion of children with tooth decay in Tower Hamlet remains significantly higher than London and the rest of England. Thus, Oral Health remains a major problem and that’s why we developed a campaign specifically for young children.

Kids First is a fantastic chance to take an active role in teaching children the importance of good oral hygiene and a balanced diet.
By involving and engaging the young, impressionable children, they have the chance to learn from the exciting educational role plays that our Kids First team put together. We’re in need of enthusiastic, energetic people to join our team.
The Tower Hamlets has one of the worst DMFT (Decayed missing filled teeth) for children in the UK and is in desperate need for us to educate and demonstrate to these children how to keep their teeth clean and healthy for life.
HELP IN NEED ASSOCIATION
We have various fundraising schemes taking place all year round attracting all years to get involve- our Burns Ball being the most popular. We’ve had several successful doughnut sales where we’ve raised £209!
The Ceilidh night ended with everyone thoroughly pleased with their new found talent in Scottish country dancing as well as the knowledge of being able to help people who have been robbed of the chance of having a safe, healthy and happy life.
We also have tube collections once a month and we need as many volunteers as possible with loud, cheery and high spirited voices to get as much money as possible!
Every month we have a meeting in the SU upstairs in the Clubs and Soc room where we discuss how much money should be given to new applicants and we also receive follow up information from previous applications.
It's extremely rewarding to know that all the hard work that goes into raising money and organizing different events really benefits and relieves those people in need.
Sign up at Freshers Fair and enjoy being involved!! If you have any questions or want more information don’t hesitate to get in touch:
